Image source: Know Your Meme We use memes everyday, whether to get a quick laugh out of our friends or to brighten our own day. M y friends ended up creating a meme out of a picture they took of me, all because I was Hangry( meaning I was hungry and because I was hungry it resulted in me being angry, hence the combination of the two words to create hangry)But have we really taken into consideration where theses memes originated from. How did they come about? I'm sure they did not just pop up on the internet, it needed to start from somewhere. Well this question popped in my head many times before and I actually decided to explore this. The word meme was introduced in 1976, it did not just arrive in the 2000's (sorry for bursting that bubble) by Evolutionary Biologist Clinton Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene. The word meme is based off the Greek word mimēma "that which is imitated" in relation to the pattern of a gene. The word meme is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as " an element of a culture or system of behaviour passed from one individual to another by imitation or other non-genetic means ".
