But if you eventually want to become an dive pro it might be a good idea to find a place with some tough conditions like cold water or poor visibility to start with. This will improve your skills and make you a more diverse diver. Amanda and myself both learnt how to dive in New Zealand, where the water is normally around 17-23º C (62-72º F). It was tough at the beginning having but after that, diving in places like the Caribbean have been very easy. In our case, it was a great decision to start diving in cold water.

What do you like most about the job? I love the fact I can work in countries all over the world, and I get to travel a great deal. I love also the fact that I am constantly introducing people to diving, and being a part of their amazing experience. Good customer service and building a rapport with your students is important. In addition, I am very much involved with marine conservation and teaching people about the wonders of the ocean and what they can do to help – it is very rewarding. What do you like least about the job? Lifting heavy dive cylinders – a fact of life for dive instructors! What are the key responsibilities? Teaching theory and practical skills for a variety of courses. We are the only National Geographic Instructor Development 5 Star PADI Dive Centre in the area, so the variety of courses I teach is incredibly broad. It requires a flexible approach and a lot of knowledge which I have accumulated over the years. What about academic requirements? Any formal demands, eg A Levels?
Divers progress from learning diving skills in "confined water" such as a swimming pool to practicing skills in "open water" in which the environment is not restricted to a small, controlled locality and depth, with conditions typical of a natural body of water which might be used by divers. [2] and the range of hazards and associated risk is significantly expanded. [3] In this context confined water is a special case of open water, as it complies with the more general condition of unobstructed access to the surface. Some recreational diver certification agencies use a variation on this term in the title of their entry level certification. [4] [5] Open Water Diver certification implies that the diver is competent to dive in unrestricted water, with various constraints regarding the conditions, and particularly that their competence is limited to diving in open water of with free access to the surface. The extreme case of open water is the deep open ocean, where the bottom is at a depth which is irrelevant to the diver as there would be no chance of surviving long enough to reach it.
It was a bit of a shock when our Course Director told us we would be starting with the divemaster exam. 'Which one? ' I asked, hoping it wouldn't be the physics one… 'All of them! ' he replied. Yes, all eight divemaster exams at once (which you have to do again during the Instructor exam). We repeated these in different forms every day until we knew what to expect from them. I knew if I was going to work in the scuba industry as an instructor I had to know everything backward and forwards. We also went through the entire Instructor manual highlighting parts and taking notes, presenting classroom elements to each other, and my favorite part – the water skills. We spent time every day in the teaching pool practicing the skills from each course again and again. For each one we had to introduce it to our 'students' – played by our fellow instructor candidates – demonstrate the dive skill perfectly, and watch them perform the skill. Each 'student' was given a problem that we had to identify and correct before debriefing the skill.
